Sculpture is for many a very natural progression of art

“Sculpture occupies the same space as your body.” Anish Kapoor
“Sculpture is the art of the hole and the lump.” Auguste Rodin

Sculpture is for many a very natural progression of art. An intimate and primal process, sculpting can be like drawing in many ways. Creating a three dimensional form requires looking and understanding in the round, from all angles. Surfaces which take the light, forms created in changing perspectives.

Hands on practices like clay modeling involve very few tools and are suitable for any age or experience. As students are working from life, similar to life drawing, there are techniques which can be learned but individual expressive style and interpretation is encouraged. This is an excellent place to start for anyone interesting in trying three dimensional art or who wishes to improve their observational skills – in drawing, painting and sculpture.

Clay modeling working from a life or portrait model, using soft clay to mould in itself or around a wire armature, this process helps to improve observation understanding of the three dimensional form (body or face). Once students improve their observational work and confidence with the modelling, students can then move into working with animals or more abstract pieces or carry on with human figurative work in their own style.

Cheltenham Art School has three kilns and clay sculptures can be fired by arrangement.
